About Moekunstikino

The fashion film festival MoeKunstiKino will take place for the fourth time. I personally have been involved with fashion documentaries for as much as thirteen years. Luckily, the world of fashion is full of diversity and excitement, with plenty of subject matter for new documentaries, offering glimpses into the past and exhibiting intriguing personalities of the present day.

This year’s program features old school heroes, who shook the fashion industry already decades ago, as well as newcomers creating turmoil in completely unexpected ways. Coco Chanel’s name needs no introduction, but it’s always exciting to find out new things about her. Halston, a true innovator of his time, rose to the heights of fashion like a shooting star and created his own fashion empire. Jean Paul Gaultier, a living legend and an iconic designer, offers a look at the birth of his remarkable collections in a documentary from a few years ago, with a new film coming up soon. And we also have fresh documentaries about legendary photographers: the beloved street photographer Bill Cunningham and Peter Lindbergh, who passed away only this September. The latest film talks about Chiara Ferragni, a social media star and the most powerful fashion influencer in the world.

This year has been rich in fashion documentaries, and several new films are on the way – watch out also for our special screenings and follow us on social media.

See you in cinema and fashion!

Program

3.10.19
17.30
Peter Lindbergh – Women’s Stories
Director Jean-Michel Vecchiet / 103 min / Germany 2019
Venue: Cinema Sõprus

The documentary portrays one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Sisters, friends, wives and collaborators carry the plot of the film, go back to the origins of his life and his unique work - to figure out what we will never be able to fully understand: Why, and how, does one become an artist? And where does this creative force come from that resists all analysis? Top models, actresses and icons, all these women magnified by his camera for nearly forty years, join the ones in the background to shine a light on the life and artistic evolution of Peter Lindbergh.

4.10.19
17.30
Jean Paul Gaultier at Work
Director Loic Prigent / 52 min / France 2015
Venue: Cinema Sõprus

What if we watched Jean Paul Gaultier at work giving the definitive master class on what constitutes the essence of his work? Jean Paul Gaultier’s work is making clothes, not putting on fashion shows, producing perfume, talking to the media or presenting programs on MTV. But making clothes. He sketches them, of course, but more importantly, he creates them by draping them, constructing them around the body of the fitting model. 12 of Jean Paul Gaultier’s most iconic creations are re-created directly onto a fitting model, in front of the camera, in understated, white surroundings. 10 women’s outfits and 2 men’s outfits. In Haute Couture, the “toile” is the first stage, carried out using untreated, beige linen, which enables appraisal of the style. Like a first draft, the moment during which everything can still be changed, before the creation takes on its final shape. Jean Paul Gaultier at work can be viewed as a sequence shot, in which the garments materialize before our eyes, revealing how his thought process develops between ideas and material. Gaultier’s oeuvre, recounted by himself, in the first person - like a lasting legacy of creativity.

19.00
Halston
Director Frédéric Tcheng / 105 min / USA 2019

Tcheng frames Halston’s story as an investigation using scripted scenes featuring actress and writer Tavi Gevinson as a young archivist diving into the Halston company records. The viewer is taken behind the headlines and into the thrilling struggle between Halston’s artistic legacy and the pressures of big business. America’s first superstar designer, Halston created an empire and personified the dramatic social and sexual revolution of the last century. Moving beyond Halston’s embodiment of 1970s glamour, Tcheng reveals Halston’s impact on fashion, culture, and business.

Director: Yann L’Hénoret

Runtime: 94 min

Country: France

Year: 2019

Inspired even as a boy by the Folies Bergere, the legendary Paris cabaret venue, couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier always wanted to stage a show there. “But what story can I tell?” he muses in this doc about the six months of preparation that went into the show. “Mine.” Combining fashion with film, dance, theater, and unapologetic over-the-top-ness, the revue offers a 40-year career retrospective of the designer who is practically never spoken of without using the phrase enfant terrible. Notorious among cinephiles for his costumes for The Fifth Element and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover and among pop fans for Madonna’s pointy cone brassiere, he also incorporated teddy bears and S&M fetish gear as design motifs. In the show, the fanciful and outrageous meets the naughtily witty (a skit sending up Vogue dragon lady Anna Wintour) and the poignant (a tribute to his partner Francis Menuge, who died in 1990).
