About Moekunstikino

Fashion affects all of us, whether we admit it or not. We all make fashion choices: which trousers or dress to buy next? Which brands to prefer? Which shops to visit? Do we know who has designed all these clothes that we buy? Do we explore where and how they have been made? Do we feel the fabrics? Are we conscious fashion consumers? Perhaps we do not give a hoot and say that fashion does not appeal to us at all, yet we occasionally have to buy new clothes and pick something to wear every morning.

There is a saying that you are what you eat. We can extend this idea: you are what you eat and wear. A passion for fashion does not necessarily mean keeping up with every new trend and wearing the colour of the season. There is absolutely no need to change half of the wardrobe every season and donate old clothes to “charity”. Loving fashion means loving yourself, other people and the environment. It is about making informed choices, appreciating quality, knowing a bit about the history of fashion, and acknowledging that what really matters is the right feeling, not the price of a new garment. Feeling right about the manufacturer, the fabric, how it fits, and several other important details.

The fashion film festival MoeKunstiKino offers a selection of new fashion documentaries to help you keep up with the fashion world and love it (even more). To see people who have dedicated their lives to fashion, be passionate together with them, and realise why fashion matters.

This year’s program includes a number of documentaries about the greats of the fashion and art world. Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Yayoi Kusama, Christian Dior, Guo Pei and many others appear on the big screen to share their thoughts, accomplishments, setbacks and, above all, passion. We know that a great many fashion lovers will come to see the films. Hopefully, there will also be newcomers who are only discovering the world of fashion. We believe that there will be something for every taste.

See you in cinema and fashion!

MCQUEEN
Director Ian Bonhóte / 111 min / UK 2018
Venue: Cinema Sõprus

“My shows are about Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll. It’s for the excitement and the goosebumps. I want heart attacks. I want ambulances.” ‘Lee’ Alexander McQueen’s rags-to-riches story is a modern-day fairy tale laced with the gothic. An unremarkable working-class boy from East London, he harnessed his demons and went on to become a global one man fashion brand and one of the most iconic artists of the century. How did this punk rebel overturn the silver-spoon world of Paris haute couture, ushering in the heady, revolutionary era of ‘Cool Britannia’? And why, at the height of acclaim and power, did he shockingly put an end to it all? Mirroring the savage beauty, boldness and vivacity of his design, this film is an intimate revelation of McQueen’s own world, both tortured and inspired, which celebrates a radical and mesmerising genius of profound influence.

THE DRAWINGS OF CHRISTIAN DIOR
Director Loïc Prigent / 52 min / France 2018

His drawings will be animated and commented by contemporary audio archives – replacing the audience in the social context of the 50s. With interviews of fashion historians, friends of the designer but also dressmakers who are working with Dior or even stars who exemplify the brand today: Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson or Jennifer Lawrence have succeeded the previous icons like Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth or… Marlene Dietrich – who only wore Dior!

WESTWOOD: PUNK, ICON, ACTIVIST
Director Lorna Tucker / 80 min / UK 2018
Venue: Cinema Sõprus

Dame Vivienne Westwood is Punk Rock’s Grande Dame. One time agent provocateur, the doyenne of British fashion, an eco-conscious Boudicca and one of the most influential originators in recent history. The film explores her uphill struggle to success, looking closely at her artistry, her activism and her cultural significance. Blending iconic archive and newly shot observational footage, this era defining, intimate origins story will be told in Vivienne’s own words, and through touching interviews with her inner circle of family, friends and collaborators. WESTWOOD: PUNK, ICON, ACTIVIST is the first film to encompass the remarkable story of one of the true icons of our time, as she fights to maintain her brand’s integrity, her principles - and her legacy.

A FASHION UPRISING
Directors Laurent Lunetta, Ariel Wizman / 52 min / France 2018
Venue: Cinema Sõprus

On April 24th, 2013, in Bangladesh, the Rana Plaza collapsed. 1135 fashion workers died, crushed under the debris. The world is becoming aware of the underside of a system verging on insanity. Too much hoarding, consumption, pollution, too much pressure from shareholders... Globalized fashion is a planet pushed to its limits, a toxic passion – both absurd and dangerous. Throughout the world, an International of creators, enlightened spirits and activists are rising up to humanize fashion. Some go back to weaving, others create with 3D printers, but all want an ethical activity, a human-faced fashion world. Say goodbye to insensitive, shallow and grotesque fashion. Today, another fashion world is possible.

21:00
KUSAMA: INFINITY
Director Heather Lenz / 78 min / USA 2018
Venue: Cinema Sõprus

Now the top-selling female artist in the world, Yayoi Kusama overcame impossible odds to bring her radical artistic vision to the world stage. For decades, her work pushed boundaries that often alienated her from both her peers and those in power in the art world. Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her: the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions, sexism and racism in the art establishment, mental illness in a culture where that was particularly shameful and even continuing to pursue and be devoted to her art full time on the cusp of her 90s. In spite of it all, Kusama has endured and has created a legacy of artwork that spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, poetry and literary fiction. After working as an artist for over six decades, people around the globe are experiencing her installation Infinity Mirrored Rooms in record numbers, as Kusama continues to create new work every day.
